Myringotomy is the incision of the
tympanic membrane and aspiration of
the fluid that is built up underneath the
eardrum with pressure in the
tympanum, in which a doctor would
insert a myringotomy tube. This would
be indication for acute otitis media and
will be treated for antibiotics.

Serous Otitis media is very common in
pediatric or children between 6 months
and 3 years of age. The only
symptoms of this would be conductive
hearing loss from a blocked
eustachian tube causing middle ear
effusion.

About 50% to 60% of children in this
age group will have effusion in their
middle ear.
The symptoms could peek again at the age of 4 and 6 years
old. Children at this age group or 30% of them have fluid in the
middle ear with hearing  loss at some time.

The majority of these children with the serous otitis meda have
spontaneous recovery.

Hearing loss is the main concern when fluid is present in the
middle ear. Reason for this concern is that the fluid build up
left untreated the hearing loss could affect the language
developing of the child and could lead to speech issues and IQ
development.

If The fluid persists for more then 8 to 12 weeks and is
accompanied by
hearing loss the child must have surgery and
the fluid will be removed and
Eustachian Tubes will be inserted
to keep the fluid pressure down and antibiotics submitted to
treat future infections.
